Heads guided on extending service

Education secretary Ruth Kelly has launched a guide to help head teachers implement the extended schools programme. The long-awaited Extended Schools Prospectus, published on Monday, had been delayed by the general election.

By 2008, the Government wants half of primary schools and a third of secondary schools to offer childcare from 8am to 6pm, and for all schools to do this by 2010.

Ms Kelly also gave details of local authority funding allocations for extended schools.

In May, the Government announced 680m for extended schools, including 430m distributed directly to local authorities to plan services. It is intended to be 'start up' funding, with the aim that services become sustainable, for example, through charging for childcare or reconfiguring funding at local level by Children's Trusts pooling budgets to support extended services in schools.
