Huge numbers of playworkers needed

* Out-of-school clubs in England have doubled in four years. * In 1997 there were 3,500 clubs; today there are 7,000 clubs, offering 240,000 places.

* Start-up funds from the New Opportunities Fund and other sources plus support from the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships have been behind the increase.

* The Government wants 12,000 clubs to be established by 2005.

* An estimated 30,000 extra staff, with 20,000 of them trained, will be needed.

* The Kids Clubs Network would like to see a club attached to all 20,000 primary schools by 2010.

* The estimated growth of the workforce is 1993 - 2,000; 1997 - 14,000; 2001 -30,000. Targets are 2005 - 60,000; 2010 - 100,000.
