ICT project aids practice

A Europe-wide study into the impact of a project that donates computers to pre-school children in disadvantaged areas has hailed the scheme as a success. Over two years, researchers looked at the effect of IBM's KidSmart Early Learning programme in six countries and found significant improvements to teaching and learning.

An international ICT environmental rating scale used to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme to practice and provision, before and after settings were introduced to KidSmart, found that both teachers and children benefited.

All the early years settings in the UK, Italy and Portugal achieved a level 5 rating - 'good' - after just one year of using KidSmart.

An independent team carried out the research led by John Siraj-Blatchford at Cambridge University and Iram Siraj-Blatchford at the Institute of Education, University of London.
