In brief...Child Poverty Action Group accuse Government

The Child Poverty Action Group has accused the Government of hypocrisy over it's pledge to eradicate child poverty after it rejected MP's calls for an urgent overhaul and xtra cash for the Social Fund. The Social Security Select Committe (now the Committe for Work and Pensions) claimed in April that the Government's policy of tackling child pverty would be undermined unless it boosted the Social Fund to help the poorest and most vulnerable. CPAG director Martin Barnes said, 'Labour's refusal to accept that the social fund is falling is breathtaking and contradictory.'
