In brief...School curriculum guidance

School curriculum guidance is urging schools to use the flexibility within the curriculum to ensure pupils are being taught what is relevant to them. Issuing the 5-14 Curriculum Guidelines last week, education minister Jack McConnell said, 'This guidance allows teachers to make sure that young people have skills they can use out of the school environment. Particularly for pupils who lack motivation or have discipline problems, the curriculum has room for activities which can revive their interest in learning. And for more able pupils, this flexibility allows more rapid progress in certain subjects.'
