In brief...The new minister in charge of early years

The new minister in charge of early years taking over from Margaret Hodge is Stephen Timms, the Department for Education and Skills confirmed on Monday. Mr Timms is the school standards minister, the post vacated by his predecessor, Estelle Morris, who has become education secretary. Mrs Hodge is now the higher education and lifelong learning minister and her portfolio includes universities, adult skills, post-16 education and training. At the newly-created Department for Work and Pensions, formerly the Department for Social Security, Baroness Hollis of Heigham is minister for children and the family, with a portfolio including integrated child credit and child benefit, the Child Support Agency, poverty and social exclusion, childcare, asylum, green issues, and maternity and paternity pay.
