In brief...The nutritional standards of nursery and school meals in Northern Ireland

The nutritional standards of nursery and school meals in Northern Ireland have been put up for consultation in proposals to limit chips to twice a week, limit baked beans to once a week and offer children at least one type of fruit and one type of vegetable every day.The consultation document, Catering for Healthier Lifestyles, also gives schools guidance on cooking methods, such as reducing fat and salt content. Education minister Martin McGuinness said, 'Schools can make a significant contribution to secure, maintain and improve children's health, not just through what is taught in the classroom about healthy eating but also through the school meals service.' The document is on the website www.deni.gov.uk and views can be contributed until 8 February.
