Large, clean plastic bin with a lid, a selection of objects beginning with the same letter, card, black marker, pen, wrapping paper and tape.

Step by step

* Cover the bin in bright wrapping paper.

* Write a large letter 'a' on white card with a thick black marker pen and tape it to the outside of the bin.

* Ask the children to fill the 'letter' bin with as many articles beginning with 'a' as they can find. Allow a week for this.

* Encourage the children to look at home, with their parents' help, as well as in the school environment, for items such as an anorak, apple, acorn, alarm clock, ambulance toy, and so on.
