Inquiry into the case of Baby P called for

Children's minister Ed Balls has ordered an inquiry into the case of Baby P, the 17-month- old boy in Haringey, London, who died after months of abuse. Mr Balls said an initial Serious Case Review, commissioned by Haringey Local Safeguarding Children Board, found poor-quality practice, management and supervision of staff in all agencies, and that health professionals appeared not to have followed appropriate procedures when there was evidence of a child having suffered non-accidental injuries. The inquiry by Ofsted, the Healthcare Commission and the Chief Inspector of Constabulary is due to report by 1 December.

Baby P died after suffering 50 injuries including a broken back, eightfractured ribs and extensive bruising. Baby's P's mother, her boyfriendand a 36-year-old man from Bromley were all found guilty of 'causing orallowing the death of a child or vulnerable person' and are to besentenced on 15 December. Children's Secretary Ed Balls has also askedLord Laming to carry out a national review to report on progress on therecommendations he made following the Victoria Climbie inquiry.
