Kent code redrafted

Private and voluntary nurseries in Kent have been issued a revised version of the local authority's interpretation of the Government's Code of Practice for the free nursery education entitlement for three- and four-year-olds. Kent County Council has put the document out for consultation with early years providers until 6 April.

The original document nurseries were asked to sign up to was withdrawn by KCC in September following a wave of protest by local nursery owners.

Many providers objected to the amount of detailed financial information requested about their businesses.

The council said, 'Following an extensive internal examination of the delegated conditions, we have redrafted them to try to minimise the administration involved and make them as clear as possible, while meeting all the statutory and other essential requirements.'

But Darrell King, owner of the Old School House nursery in Headcorn and chair of the Association of PVI Providers (Kent), said she had heard from many providers who said there was little significant change.
