A new web-tool aims to help early years providers review their practice in the light of the Foundation Stage principles, explains Michael Baxter Thoughtful and responsive provision in the Foundation Stage is the starting point for every child's entitlement to achieve the five outcomes: being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution to the provision and wider community, and building towards economic well-being.

These five outcomes, first set out in Every Child Matters, the Government Green Paper on reforming children's services, then included in the Children Act 2004, now constitute the criteria by which Ofsted inspects settings under the new system introduced in April 2005.

'Principles for early years education', as set out in Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, underpin that commitment to quality provision and the five outcomes for all children.
