LETTER OF THE WEEK - WHAT KEEPS MEN OUT

While I applaud Mr Morris' attempts to encourage male childcarers intothe industry (News, 24 February), he is misguided as to the reason whymen do not enter the profession. It is low pay that keeps men out ofnurseries.

On the rare occasion that we have men register at Tinies, nurseriesclamour to hire them. Therefore it is not a question of lack of demand. No breadwinner, male or female, can support a family on the averagenursery staff wage. Until nurseries and the Government do something toraise salary levels, you will not see any significant increase in maleworkers in childcare.
