STAR LETTER - GIVE EVERY CHILD A CHANCE FOR HELP

I read with interest children's minister Sarah Teather's article 'Lookback on progress' (26 May).

While I appreciate that financial resources are precious and need to betargeted at those most in need, I believe that aiming resources to onlya category judged to be the most disadvantaged and deprived isfundamentally wrong.

Sadly, our eldest son, now 16, not coming from a deprived familybackground, not attending a day nursery or knowledgeable setting - justa local playgroup in pre-Ofsted days - slipped through the net andresulted in us being judged as bad parents and our son as badly behaved.Actually he had undiagnosed difficulties which belied his ability toarticulate well, learn visually and have a tremendous memory. Hisdiagnosis was not made until he was nine years old. He did not receiveany extra help in school until he was in Year 3, when his self-esteemwas extremely low.
