EVIDENCE SUPPORTS EARLY INTERVENTION

The comments of Dr Ellie Lee, quoted in the article on the Allen Report(online, 4 July), dismiss without evidence the consistent findings ofneuro-scientific research over the past two decades on human braindevelopment pre-birth and in the all-important first two years oflife.

There can no longer be doubt that 'relationships build brains'.

Brains develop in response to the stimuli of their environment, and thecentral feature of the infant environment is the attachment relationshipwith the carer. Within a positive attuned attachment relationship, thebrain connections are formed which allow the infant to develop theability to regulate stress and impulse, to build emotional literacy andempathy, and to put together a coherent pre-cognitive framework forfurther learning.
