Requiring no more than some coloured pencils or pens, paper and a rubber, these games, says Lynne Garner, are none the less engrossing when we talk about pencil and paper games probably the first two many of us think of are noughts and crosses (also commonly known as tic, tac, toe) and hangman. Although both are great games, which many of us will have spent hours playing, there are plenty of others which are equally addictive yet simple. Some take just a few minutes to play while others can occupy their participants for up to 20 minutes or more.

Here are a few such games for those occasions when time, space or simply energy is limited. So, gather some paper and pencils (some require colouring pencils rather than writing pencils) and get playing!
