Move on up

Sarah Paul says she decided to study for the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Early Years at Guildford College in Surrey because she liked the scope of the course and felt it would help her to decide which area of childcare to work in. 'It was two years of full-time study and what really impressed me was how well organised and set up it was,' she says. 'It was an evenly balanced mix of practical and written work which was well integrated throughout.'

As part of the core units Ms Paul studied child protection, first aid, child health and development, and good practice.

'When I started the course I had no idea what kind of setting I wanted to work in although I thought about working in a nursery or school,' she says.

'The course helped me to identify the fact that I would like to work with children on a one-to-one basis in a family settting and I decided to opt for being a nanny.'
