Move on up

Pauline Mcloughlin says studying for a foundation degree at Accrington and Rossendale College in Bolton has enabled her to better understand why children behave how they do. 'I also feel that I am able to give them more, through my planning of activities and my interactions with them,' she adds. Before enrolling Ms Mcloughlin had worked in the sector for eight years, having obtained the Diploma in Pre-School Practice and an NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education. She assumed the foundation degree would be work-based in a similar way to the NVQ, 'But I could not have been more wrong,' she says. 'Much more reading and research was necessary - at least 12 hours a week - and more if it was a subject that I was new to, such as social policy, research methods and the role of the senior practitioner.'

A good knowledge of how to use a computer also proved invaluable: 'I was helped a lot here by my children and partner - particularly when it came to using PowerPoint for a presentation,' she says.
