Space for autism

A new animation series and interactive computer game is aimed at youngautistic children. Focusing on the link between emotions and facialexpression, 'The Space Place' features 12 episodes about characters whocome to life after their space museum closes for the night. Nik Lever,managing director of Catalyst Video, who produced the DVD, said, 'Withregular exposure to teaching tools such as this, children with autismcan dramatically improve their awareness of expressions and the emotionsthat cause them, and be able to transfer this learning to differentsituations.' TOY LENDING TOOL

Children's centres can benefit from Toy Cupboard Plus, a new softwaremanagement system designed for toy lending libraries. It has just beenset up at Greet Children's Centre, in Birmingham, which has a toylibrary on site as well as a mobile toy lending service. The packageincludes a dedicated weekday helpline and 'toybox' software to accessthe sstem remotely, Bluetooth, scanners, printers, warranties and fullday training. GARDEN BLOSSOMS

Stepping Stones Day Nursery in Great Sankey, Warrington, held a partyfor parents and children to show off the garden's brand new makeover,after staff and parents painted fences and weeded flowerbeds forplanting vegetables and fruit. Children and parents enjoyed games andprizes, and a raffle raised 100 for new equipment.

HEALTHY MINDS

Sunderland Children's Centre held a 'mental health makeover' this monthwhere families could try complementary therapies such as reflexology,reiki and Indian head massage. The event was supported by charitySunderland Mind to raise awareness of the importance of good mentalhealth.
