Healthy and happy

Nurseries across the country showed their support for healthier livingby taking part in Healthy Body, Happy Me Week on 15-21 March, promotedby the National Day Nurseries Association.

The week commenced with Muddy Monday, followed by Big Breakfast Tuesday,World Cup Wednesday, Stop the Rot Thursday and Feel Good Friday, endingwith Wonderful Weekend Fun. Children at Smarties Nursery in Chesterlearned how to look after their teeth with the help of mascot Smiley theCrocodile. Many other happy and healthy activities were enjoyed at BankHall Kindergarten in Leyland, Lancashire, Hopes and Dreams MontessoriNursery School in London, Ashbridge School and Nursery in Hutton,Preston, Just Learning in Huntingdon, Daisy Chain Childcare inLofthouse, North Yorkshire, Magic Tree Day Nursery in Harrogate, NorthYorkshire, and Educare Nursery in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Visiting artist

Children at Grimsargh Pre-School near Preston took part in a special artproject organised by the local Sure Start early years team. The settingwas visited by local artist Chris Oakden, who encouraged the children touse their imaginations and followed their lead to create a large-scalepainting based on castles, dragons and pizza picnics.

Easter art

The Alphabet House day nurseries in Lowdham and in Beeston, Nottingham,joined in a competition with local primary schools to design an Easterpicture. The winners of the youngest category were Charlie Cook, agedfour, from the Lowdham setting, and Samhi Vure, also four years old,from Alphabet House in Beeston.

Daffy dillies

Pre-school children at Little Acorns in Gomersal, West Yorkshire tookpart in a number of activities using the daffodils they planted frombulbs in October, now blossoming, to raise money for Marie Curie CancerCare.

Winning chef

Congratulations to Pat Jerrom, chef at Head Start Day Nursery andPre-School in Lewisham, London, who has won the Best Employee categoryin the Lewisham Mayor's Business awards. Pat was featured in NurseryWorld's 'Spotlight On', 18 March, for being shortlisted for theaward.

Children at Blue House Day Nursery and Pre-School in Croydon, Surrey,have been observing baby caterpillars as part of their topic on the lifecycle. Nursery manager Michaela Novotna said, 'The caterpillars have nowturned into chrysalises and the children are waiting for them to emergeas butterflies in the next 14 days.'
