Nurseries scoop lottery handout

More than 16m will be invested in building and renovating local nurseries thanks to National Lottery funding announced last week. Around 134 communities across England will benefit from the money, allocated from the New Opportunities Fund's Building Neighbourhood Nurseries programme, which will enable nursery providers to increase the number of day places available and improve childcare facilities.

A grant of 134,107 was allocated to Magic Roundabout Nurseries, based in Stockwell, London, to transform the Surrey Hall Theatre into a neighbourhood nursery.

The grant will finance 72 out of a total of 186 new nursery places in a facility that will also offer care for the over-fives, a parents' internet room, and an extensive outdoor play area. Internal windows at different heights will allow children to see what is happening in other rooms.
