Nursery nurses could gain 6,000 a year

Healthcare unions have called for community nursery nurses to be re-graded so they earn between 13,000 and 16,000 a year - a move that would allow the worst-off to earn up to 6,000 more. Evidence included in the unions' submission to the Pay Review Body, which considers the salaries of NHS nursing staff every year, points out that community nursery nurses have an essential child protection role, implement child development programmes and participate in the assessment of children's care needs by observing the developmental process. Many have a CACHE Diploma or BTec qualification. The evidence argues that this means they meet the requirements of Grade C on the nurses' and midwives' scale, paid at Pounds 13,000 to 16,000. Yet many are paid at Grade A or B, with salaries ranging from 9,735 to 13,000.
