Nursery nurses put off strike

Trade unions representing nursery nurses across Scotland have rejected a new pay offer from local authority employers a week before they were due to start five days of strike action.

Trade unions representing nursery nurses across Scotland have rejected a new pay offer from local authority employers a week before they were due to start five days of strike action.

Cosla, the joint local authority negotiating body, made its first formal pay offer on 27 August, almost two years since the trade union Unison made its initial pay claim on behalf of the nursery nurses. Although Cosla would not disclose the details of the offer, a spokesman said the meeting with the unions had been very constructive.

The joint negotiating group of Unison, GMB and T&G met on Monday morning to consider its response. Carol Ball, chairwoman of Unison's nursery nurse working group, said, 'The offer was rejected by the full trade union side. Further action will be considered. The strike, which had been due to begin on 8 September, has been postponed and we are reconsidering our position.'
