Ofsted 'must sort itself out'

Ofsted should not change its inspection process for registered daycare providers in England until it has sorted out the 'bureaucratic nightmares' around childminder registration.

The call for Ofsted to delay its forthcoming two-year programme, which is due to begin in April, was made by Gill Haynes, chief executive of the National Childminding Association (NCMA), as she expressed her anger at the long delays potential childminders have faced as they wait to be registered by Ofsted.

She said, 'People want to become registered childminders but they're being held up by a bureaucratic nightmare. Let's set the inspection process out as a priority, otherwise there will be a growth in unregistered care.'

Ofsted's annual report has said that between September 2001 and September 2002 more than 22,000 people applied to be registered as childminders in England and of these over half have received an inspection visit.
