Only a first course

Further to 'In my view' by Sue Griffin (29 April), as a registered childminder and a tutor who delivers the compulsory training course for registered childminders, I feel I must also respond to Sarah Larking's comments about the course (Letters, 26 February). The course Introduction to Childminding Practice is the first part of the Certificate in Childminding Practice, which is a Level 3 qualification. The awarding body, the Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education, is fully approved by Ofsted, which registers and inspects our profession in England.

For many registered childminders, this course is a starting point for their continuous professional development.

We also have the opportunities to become fully qualified nursery nurses and, as registered childminders, we are self-employed and work in our own homes.

Qualified nannies also deserve recognition. I believe more than ever that they should be registered in the same way as other childcare practitioners.
