Parents give childminders highest approval ratings

Registered childminders top the league table of different types of childcare as far as parents in Scotland, England and Wales are concerned, according to a study carried out by the National Centre for Social Research. Scottish childminders were rated most highly of all, with 96 per cent of parents who used them describing the service as 'very good', compared with 91 per cent in England and Wales. However, ratings across the board were generally high, with 81 per cent of formal providers judged to be very good.

In England and Wales, providers in the private sector, such as childminders, private creches or nurseries, and private playgroups, were more likely to be rated as good (by more than 80 per cent of parents) than voluntary and public providers (between 71 and 77 per cent).

Overall, more than two-thirds of formal childcare providers were rated as offering very good value for money, and registered childminders topped this league table too, at 86 per cent.
