A vision for developing support for parents over the next two and a half years in Wales has been set out by the Welsh Assembly.

The Parenting Action Plan, launched last week, aims to raise the profile of parenting by encouraging parents and carers to take a more active role in planning services for their children.

Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, Jane Davidson, said that she is 'particularly committed' to the proposal to encourage parents' greater involvement in schools.

She said, 'We want schools to be developed as bases for locally delivered family and child support, health services, youth services and adult education.'

Other proposals outlined in the document include setting up a free telephone helpline for parents and the publication of parenting support booklets.

Ms Davidson said, 'It is our intention for the plan to be a living document, continually pushing forward our commitment to supporting mothers, fathers and carers.'

The action plan is available at www.learning.wales.gov.uk.
