One in ten children in the UK has a speech and language difficulty (SLD) - some may not even speak their first words by the time they start school.
Despite the large numbers of children affected, there is very low awareness of this often hidden disability, little understanding of the difficulties these children face, and inadequate resources to help them.
As a result, these children struggle to communicate and can have tremendous difficulties learning and developing. They can get left behind and experience the frustration and misery of constant failure.
