A moment of carelessness in the playground taught nursery teacher Jenny Ellis something new about what young children will do when left to their own devices

I have worked with young children for around 30 years, but they are still teaching me. In my state nursery in south-east London, Kingswood Nursery attached to Kingswood Primary School, I decided to use the sunny spring spells we had recently to take some evocative photographs in the playground.

When it was my shift outside I took my newly loaded camera and snapped the first four or five shots around the slide and the water-tray. Then I became involved with other activities, and put my camera in its case safely on the high window sill where we place our coffee cups to be out of harm's way.
