Playing safe

Activities and resources that early years settings already offer will take on a special significance for refugees RESOURCES

RESOURCES

Settings should provide resources that celebrate diversity, are familiar to asylum seeking children and provide opportunities for self-expression.

Home corner

Home corners are a vital and adaptable part of the setting. They can be transformed into various homes and other environments. They offer opportunities for children to act out situations they have experienced (for example, arriving in the UK) and situations that are new and strange - for example, using a launderette.

They can also reflect the way things are done at home. Many settings already use a range of cooking and eating utensils such as chopsticks.

Other props are also useful. Model food, for example, can be made from clay or playdough or brought from educational suppliers, offering a useful starting point for children and staff.
