Children's charity Barnardo's and business advisory firm Deloitte setout three options, involving no extra cost to taxpayers, which betweenthem could raise 1,800,000 children out of poverty. This would almostcertainly meet the Government's target for halving child poverty by2010.
The first option is to re-direct the 2.7bn 10p tax ratecompensation package towards eradicating child poverty.
Barnardo's chief executive Martin Narey said, 'When the Governmentinvested 2.7bn to compensate losers of the 10p tax rateabolition, the benefit to families in poverty, was, essentially,zero.'
The second option is to amend the tax credit system so families earning40,000 to 50,000 no longer qualify for help, and the thirdoption is to use this extra money towards improving the life chances ofchildren living in poverty.
