Nannies are ready and willing to undergo criminal records checks - but parents are unaware that they can get them, and the cost of checking varies widely. That's the evidence from a new survey by the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses. PANN received 149 replies to a questionnaire sent out to its nanny members and found that 127 had had a full Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. Virtually all of the respondents said they agreed that nannies should have one. PANN professional officer Tricia Pritchard said, 'It is clear from this survey that nannies wish to be recognised as the professionals they are.

They willingly see a requirement to be checked and regulated as a necessity they are prepared to pay for.'

However, many nannies were charged fees of anything between 10 and over 50 for CRB checks through a nanny agency, while others got them free through their other work such as with Scouts and Guides, charities, schools or day nurseries. 'Our survey exposes the fact that some agencies are exploiting registration with the CRB as a money-making opportunity,'
