Representatives of the public services union Unison

Representatives of the public services union Unison met minister for education and young people Cathy Jamieson last week to put forward their concerns about the low pay and status of nursery nurses. Carol Ball, chair of Unison's nursery nurse working group, said Ms Jamieson had indicated that she would write to the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities about the nursery nurse pay claim recently submitted by Unison to all of Scotland's 32 councils, but had stressed that she would not and could not interfere. The union representatives also raised a number of other concerns, including the need for early years workers' job remits to be clearly linked to national occupational standards. Ms Ball added, 'We said that we wanted a review of early years education, but she didn't indicate that she would embark on that.'
