Rule changes for childcare in school

Childcare facilities in independent and maintained schools in England could come under new regulation from this September. A consultation paper, Review of Childcare Standards and Regulations, published by the Department for Education and Skills last week, said regulation would be extended in phases, starting with the youngest children and new provision. It proposed that Ofsted would start by receiving applications for registration of all existing provision in independent and maintained schools, including care for children under two, from September.

From September, Ofsted will also receive applications for registration from schools wishing to operate new childcare provision from next April.

Regulation of childcare involving only children aged two and over in independent and maintained schools will be introduced next year. Ofsted will consider applications for registration of existing provision from September 2004, with a final deadline of 31 March 2005.
