It is time that investment and resources were made available to deliver an effective national NVQ programme, says Michael Thompson, managing director of nursery chain Child Base Ihave been a strong advocate of the NVQ programme over the years. My company established its own training and assessment centre several years ago with a view to providing work-based qualifications. I am, however, becoming increasingly disillusioned with the current Government approach, more particularly the constant erosion of funding to the NVQ programme.

I am, however, becoming increasingly disillusioned with the current Government approach, more particularly the constant erosion of funding to the NVQ programme.

The whole training issue needs to be addressed. The focus in the past two years has been about getting bums on seats, and payments are made accordingly. It is not outcome-driven and there are simply not the incentives to encourage training agencies to push candidates through to their qualification.
