Staff are parents too

I was shocked by Barbara Davies' letter ('Flexibly overstretched', 20 July). Has she forgotten that her employees are parents too and that support should be given to them to provide continuity of care at home as well as at work? A good team ethos depends on seeing the nursery workers as part of families that need support, as much as the families who send their children to the nursery. I would have thought that family-friendly working practices would be supported wholeheartedly in the childcare sector, but this does not seem to be the case.

Perhaps Barbara Davies' staff would be better off looking for alternative employment that supports family life. I have found that childminding has offered me flexibility in balancing family and work life. I have a network co-ordinator who is incredibly supportive of continuity of care without overstretching individuals when they need to spend time with their families.
