The rules on flexiblity

I read Barbara Davies' letter (Nursery World, 20 July) concerning flexible working after maternity leave. I fear she has been given poor advice. An employee is entitled to request flexible working following the correct procedure, and an employer is entitled to refuse after due consideration.

An employee is entitled to request flexible working following the correct procedure, and an employer is entitled to refuse after due consideration.

Some of the valid reasons for refusal include: the burden of additional costs; detrimental effect on ability to meet customer demand; inability to re-organise work among existing staff; inability to recruit additional staff; detrimental impact on quality; detrimental impact on performance.

Most, if not all, of these reasons apply to a nursery.
