Stern parents 'turn children into victims of bullying'

Parents who exert too much control over their children may leave them more vulnerable to being bullied, according to research published last week. Young people's charity Young Voice claimed that its research shows that parenting styles can influence whether children become either the victims or perpetrators of bullying. Victims were more likely to describe their parents as exercising too much control, or treating them as 'a baby'. Having over-dominating parents or not being allowed to make decisions could leave children without the self-confidence needed to resist bullying.

Both bullies and victims were more likely to come from homes where corporal punishment or aggressive violence took place.

The report, Bullying in Britain, said, 'Schools may not be doing enough but they cannot be doing this alone. Parents must be encouraged to sign up to a whole school policy - for bullies say that their parents hold the same views on right and wrong as they do.'
