I work as an early years co-ordinator in a primary school with a nursery attached. There are three NNEBs and two classroom assistants who work in our Foundation Stage, and who work alongside two teaching staff. We work as a team -not as 'them and us', but as teaching staff. We are constantly aware of the injustice of the pay system that still does not reflect the dedication and hard work given by the team.
Nursery nurses and classroom assistants deserve credit for their labours.
They need a properly-funded structure, with quality training and appropriate pay awards. This may seem like a dreamer's wish, but it is something that will have to be addressed quickly before the education system is not only short of teachers but also the quality support staff to work alongside them.
