Television is part of the furniture

Television is part of the furniture for 33 per cent of children aged nought to three and 60 per cent of children aged up to six overall who have a set in their room, a survey for the Early Learning Centre has found. The survey by NOP found that children watch an average of 2.1 hours of television a day and that even though most parents (69 per cent) believe their offspring watch more television than they did as children, the children are also fitting more play and activities into their day, including going to nursery or school, spending time with friends and visiting play areas. Most children under six (92 per cent) regularly visit their local park, and 82 per cent regularly use soft play or fun areas. The survey also found that 99 per cent of children aged three to six have books and activity books, and almost a third of nought- to two-year-olds have board games to play with. Just over half (57 per cent) of five- and six-year-olds have video games.
