Looked after by a nanny, he was just four when she left. His writings described the impact on a child when a caregiver leaves. ‘Intimate attachments to other human beings are the hub around which a person’s life revolves,’ he said.

Kate White, psychotherapist at the Bowlby Centre and curator said, ‘I am delighted to have put together seldom-seen letters and photographs from the John Bowlby Archive at the Wellcome Library.
