The child protection system

The child protection system would be stronger if social workers were relocated from town halls to multi-disciplinary teams based in schools, health centres and other community-based facilities, claims a report published earlier this week by the think-tank Demos. The report suggests that closer relationships between social welfare and child protection professionals and the community would improve the chances for earlier and less extreme intervention. The Green Paper on children at risk, due out shortly, is expected to develop the Government's interest in IT-based identification, tracking and referral systems which would support the sharing of information between agencies. The report, The Risk Factor, can be downloaded from www.demos.co.uk or ordered from Central Books on 0845 4589910, price 10.
