The first Children's Commissioner for Northern Ireland

The first Children's Commissioner for Northern Ireland has been named as Nigel Williams, who is currently chief executive of an organisation that seeks to protect children from abuse via the internet. Mr Williams founded Childnet International in 1995 (www.childnet-int.org) and is board member of the Internet Watch Foundation and of the Internet Content Rating Association. He said, 'As Commissioner for Children and Young People, I am determined to be a strong, influential and independent voice for children, to represent their interests, protect their rights and challenge all those working with and for children to do better.' and was appointed by Home Secretary in 2001 to the Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet
