The Kids' Clubs Network

The Kids' Clubs Network has called on parents to press schools, local authorities and employers to ensure there is sufficient childcare during the summer holidays while they are working. Currently less than half the 10,000 term-time out-of-school clubs are able to offer childcare during the holidays. But the KCN said that if local authorities were made aware of the demand, they could persuade schools and other clubs that it would be cost-effective to open their doors during the summer break. According to KCN research, working parents in the north-east and Yorkshire are best served by holiday out-of-school care, while those in London and the south-east face an acute shortage. KCN chief executive Anne Longfield said, 'Holiday provision presents a clear case of "if you don't ask, you won't get".' * See Out of School, page 3
