The Ugly Duckling

Encourage children's interest in numbers and counting with this display based on a traditional story, says Sue Wise Planned learning intentions

To show an interest in numbers and counting

To willingly attempt to count, with some numbers in the correct order Resources

* Green, black and pink paper * white card * clear plastic * dark green border roll * newspaper * green foil * yellow and white feathers * sticks * brown felt * egg shells Step by step

* Tell or read the story of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen (see The Hutchinson Treasury of Fairy Tales, 19.99) and introduce the words 'duck', 'duckling', 'swan' and 'cygnet'.

* Suggest working together to make a large picture of the story. Back a low display board with green paper surrounded by a dark green border. Create a pond from clear plastic and add green foil 'pond plants'. Make bulrushes from sticks with brown felt rolled around the top and staple to the edge of the pond.
