Last week the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) came out in favour of sensible risk management and against the idea of a totally risk-free society.
HSE chair Bill Callaghan pulled no punches. 'Some of the health and safety stories are just myths,' he said. 'Health and safety is also used as an excuse to justify unpopular decisions. But behind many of the stories, there is at least a grain of truth - someone really has made a stupid decision. We're determined to tackle all three.'
Hurrah, say I. As I wrote in Nursery World earlier this year (Insight, 29 June), top health and safety experts have for some time been taking a more thoughtful approach to their task, and it's about time they took the lead in sharing that approach more widely - starting with those inspectors and safety officers nearer the ground who persist with the tick-box mentality.
