Training from the bottom up

While it is good news that the Government is proposing a national programme for Foundation Stage training, I feel it may serve to strengthen and promote inappropriate practice rather than overcome it.

Various settings work within the Foundation Stage and practitioners have differing experience. This is to be celebrated, valued and utilised. Within this it is crucial we all work towards the same goals. As the news story 'Early years favours Foundation training' (Nursery World , 22 August) points out, national agreed guidelines 'would ensure consistency and promote quality', and the scheme 'must be flexible and adaptable to make sure that local requirements and initiatives were fully recognised'. But these are contradictory statements. While we are all unique in our approaches, our children are entitled to equality of opportunity.
