Views sought on early years jobs

Childminders, playgroup workers, nursery nurses, out-of-school club workers and other early years practitioners will be invited to contribute to a review of the national occupational standards in early years care and education at levels 2, 3 and 4 across the UK. The review, which is being overseen by the National Day Nurseries Association for the Department for Education and Skills, will initially look at the occupations in the early years sector, how they have changed over recent years and how they link to other jobs in related sectors such as playwork. It will then identify the key purposes of early years work and the main functions undertaken by workers in the sector, and review the underlying principles and values and how they are represented in the existing early years standards.

The project team will go on to look at the content and structure of the existing standards and consider whether there should be changes, and decide whether new standards are needed and identify whether they exist in other sectors. They will also review the Scottish and National Vocational Qualifications and their assessment.
