Opinion: To the point - A shameful British view

Our relationship with babies needs a major overhaul, says Robin Balbernie.

I know it's a bit of a stereotype, but observing how the French get on with their babies and young children on holiday throws up a rather depressing contrast with the British.

For a start, in France there were fewer forward-facing buggies. These are an abomination and should be banned for all babies (along with books that tell you to leave your baby to cry), though they can be relatively harmless for toddlers. In my area, they seem to be especially favoured as a fashion accessory by teenage mothers. In these contraptions, the parent cannot see the glazed, switched-off expression and think a quiet baby is a good thing.
