Case study

Claire*, a 35-year-old senior nursery officer, was the victim of workplace bullying at a state nursery school.

'I was working in a state nursery attached to a school when I experienced the most horrific bullying. It started with my staff photo repeatedly being turned upside down on the noticeboard and escalated to people putting food in my coat pockets in the staff room. I had a jumper cut up with a pair of scissors. When I put my name down for things it'd be scrubbed off and they even put cleaning fluid on my coat twice. It was a terrible experience that went on for eight or nine months.

'I reported the incidents to my superiors but all the school did was talk to the staff and that didn't make the bullying stop. I felt that my manager never effectively backed me up and tried to push the situation under the carpet.
