Breakfast clubs win badly needed cash

The Scottish Executive announced a 20 per cent increase in funding for children's breakfast club services last week to coincide with the publication of a study that found 70 per cent of clubs were worried about sustainability. An additional 50,000 will raise the total funding available to 300,000. Local authorities are now being invited to bid for grants from the one-off fund. Decisions will be made in June and the money will be given out in August. The fund is being administered through the Scottish Community Diet Project, which can contacted at www.dietproject.co.uk.

An additional 50,000 will raise the total funding available to Pounds 300,000. Local authorities are now being invited to bid for grants from the one-off fund. Decisions will be made in June and the money will be given out in August. The fund is being administered through the Scottish Community Diet Project, which can contacted at www.dietproject.co.uk.

Grants could be used to pay for better or more varied food, to upgrade facilities or purchase better equipment, or to set up health promotion activities.

Social justice minister Margaret Curran said, 'The Executive has always said that we do not want to take breakfast out of the family home, but we recognise that for many parents, breakfast services help them to attend work or further education while their children are cared for in a safe and encouraging environment.'
